Title: Combining Crowdsourcing Approaches with Sensing to Solve New Problems

Abstract: Crowdsourcing is an online, distributed problem solving and production model where online communities are mobilized to serve organizational needs. Participatory and opportunistic sensing approaches allow this model to include direct recordings of environmental characteristics and to track changes in real time. This presentation discusses four distinct crowdsourcing approaches designed to solve four kinds of problems and explores opportunities for the integration of sensing and automated data collection efforts into human labor and intelligence. The aim of this presentation is to provide clearer thinking about the design of crowdsourcing applications to solve new problems, especially challenges facing the public sector or serving the greater good. With so many new tools at the disposal of organizations and researchers, what kinds of grand challenges can be addressed to design a better, smarter world? Best practices, challenges, and ethical considerations in crowdsourcing are also introduced.
